Document Status in WEB UI - Engineering Record

Gurus,

I would like to know what is the best way to include the status field of the DIR in the Engineering Record under Items--> Documents.

The standard structure does have the field for status.Is there a way that it can be configured or write an enhancement on the DIR structure to include the document status.

Kindly advice.
