We ran into a similar scenario recently meaning we wanted to upgrade our FES but not touch the backend system. Luckily we did the upgrade in our sandbox landscape. According to SAP note 1830198 you can upgrade the FES components independently of the backend system components assuming the minimum requirements are met but it simply isn't true. In our case upgrading from NW731 200/07 to NW74/13 on FES and leaving backend system components on 200/07 broke $filter functionality. We had to upgrade the backend system components as well and apply SAP note 2245413 on both FES and the backend system. Ignore what the note says, you need to install the note on both, FES and the backend system. Breaking compatibility was probably unintentional, I'm waiting to get an official statement from SAP.
