Yes, upgrading Gateway component(s) on FES but not upgrading Gateway component(s) in the backend system will break $filter functionality. After you have upgraded components on FES and the backend system, apply SAP note 2245413 on both FES and the backend system to fix $filter. Ignore what the note says, you need to install the note on both, FES and the backend system.
